Evaluation Question 7

'Looking back at the preliminary task (continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt from the progression from it to the full product?'

You can clearly tell that we have gained a lot of knowledge when it comes to filming, improving in all four areas of Camera work, Mis en scene, sound and editing.

With Mis en scene you can see a huge improvement compare from our final piece to our preliminary task, the most noticeable use of mis en scene that improved was our location/ setting as we filmed in a number of different places to show more creativeness within our final draft. We went to a range of different places from an abandoned cabin to a shed. By traveling to different places we made our film a lot more believeable even though it would have taken more time and effort.

Our use of mis en scene was extremely skillful, as we had an exterior and an interior shots that were in completely different locations, but we made them look like they were on the exact same spot, we tricked the audience into believing that we made the film in just one location.

An improvement we made with our camerawork is that we were a lot more cautious and alert to not making any mistakes with the shots like we did in the preliminary having Mr Go and myself in the background of the shots. obviously that would be a huge mistake to have people in the background of the footage and things suddenly missing, so we learnt from that not to do the same mistake in our "missed call" film.

With sound we used it very effectively, especially with the music using synchronize sound making the music go with the shots at the opening/revealing shots which helped create a eerie atmosphere that we know something s not right even though the setting was quite creepy but the music/sound helped the audience feel that bit more creeped out by the whole thing, which was an extremely good use of sound.

With editing warp stabilizer we were able to keep a shot looking completely still and slowed down where as in our preliminary we didn't use much editing in the shots.so therefore our 'missed call' video looks a lot more professional.

Practice Clip

Clip 1 Skateboard)

This was a very good use of focusing on a moving object, but in our first attempted jay wasn't in focus so we redid it in order to get a better shot. as we redid it the shot looked a look more professional and sharper.

Clip 2 Clock)

This shot took a lot of time to get right, as we had to change the location and height of the tripod. it took us around three attempts to make sure we got the focus pull just right.

Clip 3 Bottle and Legs)

we done a another focus pull but this time with the focus being changed from one object to another, this allows us to build tension and slowly reveal important shots.

Clip 4 Phone)

this shot we never in my opinion got right as we could quite walk at a steady pace whilst walking with the fig rig but we came up with ideas such as using a chair for a nice flowing movement from the camera. this shot was a difficult one but there were ways around it.

Character Profile

The image above i think best suits the older brother who is looking for revenge on his younger brothers killers as the way he dresses is relevant to the culture surrounding our film, the snapback (hat) shows that he's a urban character and the language he uses may be for a younger viewer, which attracts a younger audience as they understand and can relate to the characters. also stereotypically people with hoodies are considered to be bad or causing trouble which his Aaron is not until his brothers murder occurs. we named the character Aaron as we feel this is a stereotypical upper-class name such as William. We feel his age should be around 21

This character is Aaron's younger brother Oscar who is a innocent teen who gets caught up in something that wasn't to do with him which resulted in his death. he would be like a average teenager who likes to play football with his friends, and play computer games at home. unlike his brother he doesn't have connections with friends who are in gangs and is a innocent boy. we think his age should be around 17, also we think he would dress a lot like his brother because he looks up to him as a big influence in his life from what he wears to how hr acts.

This is Ricky who murders Oscar. he murders oscar because he sees oscar and his older brother Aaron whiteness a murder. Aaron would be your stereotypical "Chav" or hood rat who hangs around shops and in parks. he's a very intimidating character who thinks a life of crime with his gang friends is a good pathway.  following the stereotype he would be wearing a hoodie at all times, baggy jeans and some trainers also i feel he should wear a man bag. we feel Aaron should be around the age of 20

This is Fraser "right hand man" Ricky. i feel the stereotype of someones "right hand man" is someone who thinks very alike to there leader and agrees with him a lot and follows the same views as Aaron does, Also i feel he would be wearing the same clothes or similar as he aspires to be him, he is involved in witnessing oscar see the murder and informs Aaron. i believe his age should be around 18 as someone who's younger usually looks up to someone older.

Backing Tracks for our sounds in the opeining sequence

Spring Board will help create an eerie tension throughout the opening sequence, working well the voice-over of jay helping to increase the tension, also the music inst too noticeable allowing  the audience to really considerate on what they see.

Swollen cloud works extremely well with the pace of the opening sequence really allowing the scene to build tension and make the audience want to concentrate on whats actually going on, causing the audience to start questioning whats going on as its slowly revealed in beat with the music.

I like Puffy Cloud as it has different paces and volumes, which will work well with time as more and more things will be revealed causing more tension which will work well with the music increasing pace and sound.

Osprey is a good soundtrack in a way as it gives a creepy aspect to the opening, sounding a bit like a childs toy in a way, linking with the idea of the young teen being murdered. the problems with it though is that its quite short and a bit too creepy, making it sound like a horror.

Odd Wand has a good pace to it but it lacks seriousness making it less intense when you see the actual film, even though it uses a good sound.

Animatic

This is the final storyboard/ animatic of the opening sequence to our film. We have followed conventions by having the production idents and the title in a particular order. The shots drawn are a plan of the shots that we are going to use as part of our actual opening sequence, though some shots may be added or moved in the shooting and editing process. We even added sound effects a voice in order to give a feel of what the piece may sound like. This animatic will work as a good plan for what we are going to film and how it will be put together so that we all have a clear cohesive idea of what we will be aiming for as an end product.

Props for Thriller Intro

The following is a list of props that as a group we require for the opening to our film and the reason for it being needed in the piece:
  • The gun, this is needed in the piece as it is used but the antagonist as the end of the sequence to kill Oscar. we chose to have him use a gun instead of any other weapon because a gun massively creates a feeling of power, danger and a fear of the person in possession of the gun on the part of the antagonist but particularly here in the UK it perhaps also implies that this person is bad/ evil as it is illegal to have a own a gun. These thoughts are then strongly reinforce by the antagonist killing a seemingly innocent person. I believe that by using the prop of a gun we will be able to creates tension and shock in the audience rather than excitement.
  • the Phone, this is a key part of the opening of the story and to how we are going to create dramatic effect as we a voice message of our protagonist through it and it builds tension as it will make us fear for the life of the protagonists brother as it will inform that audience that Oscar is in danger before we even see that he is dieing.
  • A broken door, this is show at the front of a run down house or at the entrance to a room as it indicates that the house/ room has been broken into with a significant amount of force, this will hopefully shock that audience as they will know that possibly something bad has happened in order for the house/ room to have been broken into. This prop will also help with building tension as is also carries a certain amount of ambiguity as it is only a small clue to what may have happened.
  • A skateboard, this is used in one of the very first shots. This is used as it gives an indication of the area that the scene is taking place and it helps to set the mood of the film, also the sound of a skateboard rolling against a silent background with low key lighting can create an eerie atmosphere that can immediately set the audience on edge and start the slow build up of emotions that start the film.

Memento Opening Analysis

Company Logo

The Logo is called Lost Dog Productions and it has an image of a dog walking into the centre of the stage with the logo name fading in when the noise of the dog howling comes on. Our logo is meant to represent thriller films, the things that we inserted which target a thriller audience would be the tension built with the insertion of the dog, then the howling noise. The dog changes colour to represent the idea of a "lost dog" that he has now been on his own so much that the lost dog is independent from being alone so long, which also relates to the idea of a thriller story. also the change in colour shows that he is unique with it being a different colour to the text. We used an appleberry font, as the text is not too creepy or too sinister that it fits in well with the themes of a thriller being mysterious. The idea of a dog being lost is an adventure which is great as our film relates with adventure, so you know what to expect when you show they see the dog. a dog is very representative of energy power, specifically the idea of a husky.

Distributers

Target Audience

As my film is a thriller which would attract a youth audience as it will relate to the location and age of the main character, by having someone similar with the film will instantly attract you to that movie, our audience therefore would be aimed at the under 25 males category. we can relate this to films such as kidaulthood as it's similar to our film in terms of the characters and location of the film.

The violence of the film will also  attract the young audience as it is something they would find interesting unlike a romantic comedy which they might not be as attracted too. as our film includes lots of violence with a lot of youth characters which will allow the younger teenage audience to relate more with the movie, whereas an older audience wouldn't maybe understand or relate with the movie that well.
Our film is more aimed at a local audience as it is set in a more specific environment whereas a unviversal audience would have a wider range of attractions for example the film 'Godzilla' would aim at a wider audience due to the location and that more people from across the world would be interested to see it, for example as well as Americans watching the film countries from different continents would also watch it like China, Japan, England etc.
