My Distributer Research

The Purge Opening sequence Analysis

Above you can see the Purge thriller trailer.

The purge uses a lot of different techniques to engage their audience  for example the use of editing, sound and mise en scene. also the camera angles are used effectively through the use of them being CCTV shots. also the use of sound is used very effectively as it creates more of a tense feeling, the sound doesn't suit the images.

A use of editing is the use of Purge feed/Time and date of the film, relating to film so it makes the film actually seem like real life.

The use of shots/edit is used effectively to show a realistic feel about the film through the CCTV, showing a realistic violence. this images are usual to us so we don't think anything of it, we see it everyday in the mood. which creates a unsure feeling in us that this can actually happen.

The sound of the music being really slow and like casual music makes us feel really creeped out as it isn't something we would address this scenes with these sounds. this sounds would normally be addressed with posh  people who wouldn't be involved with any violence. the music we expect with violence would be see to be rap and hip hop due to its history, but the use of this music creates atmosphere.

Brick Analysis

Brick opening sequence

The opening starts with a slow paced instrumental - sounding like a xylophone to give quiet an eerie and mysterious atmosphere which goes well with what we later see of the girl laying dead on the floor. also the opening like others don't give away much as usual, it doesn't show us the character or the girl on the floor, but we do see a location at the end of the opening giving us more and more information throughout.

As the opening goes on we as the audience keep asking ourselves question naturally because we don't know whats going on, a smart strategy from film makers is to create little clues before we find out whats going on. by showing us images of the main character but not showing anything obvious away. eventually we see the eyeline match of what the guy is looking at, we see that he is looking as this dead girl not as if its a shocked but more as an observation.

We can see that the use of setting was used effectively as it gave an atmosphere for example the image of them in the sewers shows quite a low status, giving a creepy feeling that something isnt right about that place. Mise en scene with the use of costume and setting to tell us that even before we see there both at a school the boy whose wearing smart shoes may be in education and the girl wearing smartly dressed clothing also suggests she was in education and quite innocent, still a little girl.

editing was used to good use as they went back in time which you could tell from the last shot being of the girl dead in the sewer with her bracelet then alive in a school with the exact same bracelet on. also the sound bridge of the school bell going off before we even see them in the school, allowing us to already before seeing there in school that they'll be in school.

The sound of the bell in the background makes it a quite a childish feel, that you would normally address bells with children. which makes us feel that the characters are quite young which relates to later in the opening that there both in school still.

The Bourne Supremacy Opening Analysis

As per usual at the beginning of the opening it includes the production team and the title of the film. This opening titles is a good example of one which doesn't give too much away, making us think, it starts with a narrator giving away a lot of suggestion shut nothing clear with the images also not being extremely clear .

The use of fast images being shown at the very beginning was used well as it created tension right from the off making us focus on what the shots are showing and where he is or who he was. as more shots are being shown the faster and faster the shots are shown only being seen for half a second at one point.

as the shots stop and the pace comes to an immediate holt we finally see who the main character is and where they are giving us more information but still not giving away who they are or where they had come from.

Also i noticed that there wasn't a lot of use of sound, there wasn't any music playing from the beginning but that just put emphasis on the gun shot we hear, which means they wanted the audience to feel surprised by the shot but also wanted us to expect it from the increase in pace of the shots changing and sound increasing.

Sweeney Todd Opening Analysis

the video above is the opening titles of the film Sweeney Todd which creates quite a creepy and sinister mood within the audience by using numerous camera shots, edits, mise en scene and music. The opening sequence doesn't just give off a creepy feeling as the shots that are taken are quite comical at the same time to give us as the audience inscurety about what is expected.

Much like every other opening sequence Sweeney Todd first show the production company in this case it is DreamWorks and Warner Brothers, the production titles are shown for 40 seconds of the 3 minute opening. a unique thing about the iMovie productions is that the theme music for them is not used but instead a creepy soundtrack linking with the movie.

The opening sequence uses its comical and sinister approach effectively as it ix things you wouldn't expect to be together which gives it a serious but also humorous view, for example the images of the the pies leaking with blood and blood being poured into the sewers and sea.

The use of soundtrack is used effectively as it is a key way of creating an atmosphere in this case a creepy and mysterious atmosphere is created due to the fact it started off slowly withe piano and as more and more graphic images were being shown the more serious and tense you felt with the music building up in speed. The ,music also flow well withe pace of the shots.

World war z

World War Z like most films will have titles throughout the introductions, but in this introduction nothing is given away, whereas in films such as Zombieland. I like this opening sequence as it is quite mysterious, having slow images of shots with people with different backgrounds and social groups to show humanity. all the shots are cut in half with shapes as a transition to create an effect that something isn't quite right.
